The launch-day guide
MW4 Multiplayer: what launches on October 23, and what you already earned
Multiplayer is not part of DMZ Early Access — it arrives on October 23 with the full game. Here is the launch mode list exactly as Activision published it, all twelve Core maps by name, the Create-a-Class counts, and how the weapon levels you earned during early access follow you straight into the first match.
Multiplayer is the day-one mode. Everything in it was published by Activision before launch.
MW4 Multiplayer in one answer
Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer unlocks on October 23, 2026, on day one of the full launch. It is not part of the DMZ Early Access window that opened on October 20 — that window is DMZ only, and Activision names it as such. Official
- Twelve Core 6v6 maps published by name, plus Gunfight arenas, large-scale battlefields and the modular Kill Block. Official
- Fourteen modes named across respawn, round-based, Ground War and party groups, with six Hardcore variants at launch. Official
- Your DMZ early access progress comes with you. Activision’s launch-day progression post tells you to level up weapons during DMZ Early Access because the attachments and camos you unlock are available in Multiplayer on October 23. Official
Everything below is graded the same way as the rest of this site. If Activision wrote it, it saysOfficial. If only guides and media said it, it says Media report. Where the two disagree, we publish both and say which one we follow.
Is MW4 multiplayer in early access?
No. This is the single most repeated error in the coverage we reviewed, so it is worth being precise about. Activision’s own site names exactly two early access windows: Campaign from October 16 and DMZ from October 20. The official DMZ page describes that October 20 window entirely in DMZ terms — Story Missions, new threats, rewards — and the main MW4 page describes Multiplayer as day one content:“Day one, players deploy across 12 all-new 6v6 maps.” Official
| Window | Opens | What is in it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign Early Access | October 16, 2026 | The story campaign |
| DMZ Early Access | October 20, 2026 | The DMZ mode on Hajin — digital pre-orders and pre-purchases only |
| Multiplayer | October 23, 2026 | Core modes, Kill Block, Ground War — day one with the full launch |
There was exactly one pre-launch window in which you played Multiplayer: the August beta. It began at11:00 AM PT on Friday, August 21 for anyone with a Beta Code or a pre-order and pre-purchase, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam and Battle.net, and ran across two weekends. Official
If you are coming from DMZ Early Access, the practical consequence is that the weapon levels you earned on October 20 and 21 are already banked — seewhat your early access progress got you. If you are deciding whether to buy in, the full start time and every region are on therelease date and time zones page, and eligibility rules are onwho qualifies.
The launch mode list, as Activision published it
Activision published its launch mode list in the Gameplay Systems deep dive on August 21, 2026, and split it into four groups. This is that list, in the order it appears. Official
| Mode | Group | Activision's marking | Hardcore at launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | Respawn | Returning | Yes |
| Domination | Respawn | Returning | Yes |
| Hardpoint | Respawn | Returning | Yes |
| Kill Confirmed | Respawn | Not marked new | Yes |
| Free for All | Respawn | Not marked new | Yes |
| Counter Attack | Respawn | New | No |
| Inflation | Respawn | New | No |
| Hijack | Respawn | New | No |
| Search & Destroy | Round-Based Tactical | Returning | Yes |
| Gunfight | Round-Based Tactical | Not marked new | No |
| Gunfight 10v10 | Round-Based Tactical | New | No |
| Combat Outpost | Ground War | New | No |
| Other Ground War modes | Ground War | New — not named | Not stated |
| Gun Game | Party | Not marked new | No |
| Drop Zone | Party | Not marked new | No |
Two of the new ones are worth describing. Inflation drops a cash bounty on every elimination — hold on to it to build your team’s total, but every death leaves part of your cash behind, and the team with the most cash wins. Combat Outpost is the Ground War mode, built around vehicle and infantry combat across large-scale battlefields. Official
Where the “15 modes / 21 playlists” figure comes from
Almost every guide for this keyword leads with 15 unique modes and 21 playlists including Hardcore variants. That is a media tally, not an Activision number. Media report
Activision’s list names fourteen modes and then adds “and other modes (New)” under Ground War without naming them. The one extra name in the media list is Frontal Assault, which does not appear anywhere in Activision’s launch material — we are not treating it as confirmed.
The 21 comes from the same place: fifteen media modes plus the six Hardcore playlists Activision does confirm. The official launch total is not published, and it is at least as large as the media figure.
All twelve Core maps
Activision published the names and descriptions of all twelve Core launch maps on August 21, 2026, and marked six of them as available during the August beta. That list is below. Official
| Map | Where it is | In the beta |
|---|---|---|
| Cachette | Outskirts of a French rail terminal; an abandoned wine warehouse and a derelict mechanic’s garage turned into a covert armory | Yes |
| Coal | The remains of an old Soviet coal processing plant in a remote mountainous area, with a fallen smokestack and a slurry-filled river | No |
| Lithium | A lithium processing refinery in a rural Mexican state beneath the Sierra mountains | Yes |
| Lotus | A Korean fishing village after an amphibious assault — market, hostel, boathouse, gardens | Yes |
| Mumbai | A fugitive’s hideout inside a dense residential district centred on a Victorian market, with a rail line through it | No |
| Munition | An active North Korean command facility: munitions depot, monitoring rooms, a linked skybridge, crane, water tower | No |
| Nautical | Dawn, a South Korean ferry pulling away from a conflict zone, fires burning across the starboard side | No |
| Reactor U92 | A Korean reactor complex gone nuclear, arcs across a large concave command room above a boiling containment pool | No |
| Rooftops | The snow-lined rooftops of New York’s Hotel Times West — greenhouse, HVAC platforms, boiler room, skylights | Yes |
| Sentry | An assault on an enemy base in whiteout conditions — maintenance garage, generator room, substation, central command centre | No |
| Silkworm | A dense South Korean shopping district: a well-stocked convenience store, a gaming den, a central subway entrance | Yes |
| Transit 213 | An overgrown central parking lot in western India, packed with brightly coloured derelict buses, repair shop, gas station | Yes |
Activision attaches its own caveat to this list: “The following lists information and assets currently in development.” We are keeping it, because it is the same caveat that applies to every other figure on this page. Official
The twelve Core maps are the foundation, not the whole map pool. Activision describes a broader offering that also includes Gunfight arenas, large-scale combat spaces andmodular battlegrounds like Kill Block. Official
A correction worth repeating
One of the top-ranking guides for this keyword states that Infinity Ward has not published the full 12-map list and that only some maps have been named. That is out of date. Activision published all twelve names with descriptions on August 21, 2026 — the table above is that list, not a reconstruction. Media report
Kill Block: the map that rebuilds itself
Kill Block is the Westbridge Training Facility, and it is the most structurally unusual thing in the Multiplayer lineup. It is a live-fire training environment that physically reconfigures between rounds.Official
- Three modular sections. Two outer areas, which Activision calls End Slabs, and one central combat space, the Central Slab. Each section has multiple possible variants, so the three together form a different configuration every match — what Activision calls a Combo.
- More than 500 configurations at launch, with hundreds of unique layout combinations changing sightlines, routes, cover placement and engagement pacing between rounds.
- 3v3 Gunfight and the new Gunfight 10v10 are supported at launch, with more core Multiplayer modes planned for it.
Some sections are entirely new. Others draw on locations from Modern Warfare history. Activision’s own summary of the design is the instruction to give the mode: “Learn the layout. Adapt when it changes.”

Gunplay and movement: what actually changed
Activision calls the weapon and gunplay stack Ballistic Authority — a weapon-first technology stack that unifies precision aiming, physical handling, realistic audio propagation, enhanced visibility and smarter battlefield perception. It is an official term, published on the MW4 site, not community shorthand. The promise it carries is simple: “no bloom, no guesswork, no doubt. Every shot tells the truth.”Official
The gunplay changes
- Bloom is gone from hipfire. Shots travel where the weapon is pointed. Weapon sway, recoil, movement and handling still decide the outcome — the randomness is what was removed, not the difficulty.Official
- One field of view for weapon and world. In previous Call of Duty titles the weapon was rendered at a lower FOV than the environment. In MW4 they match, with photorealistic lens distortion on PC.Official
- Expanded FOV, PC only. A lens-based approach that widens what you can see without making targets feel smaller or further away.
- VFX masking. Muzzle effects are masked at the point of aim so targets stay visible during sustained fire, tuned individually for every optic in the arsenal.
- Depth of field reworked. It now isolates the weapon while keeping your point of aim sharp instead of blurring into the environment.
- Tactical Sprint responds to stamina. Instead of a fixed burst, movement changes as stamina depletes, with posture and stride cadence adjusting to fatigue.
The movement suite
Eight new traversal and combat movement options were published, and Activision states the full suite will be available across Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. A dedicated movement training course — the Mobility Course at the Westbridge facility — is available at launch. Official
Create-a-Class at launch
The Create-a-Class menu was rebuilt as a vertical, list-based layout, and for the first timeOperators and Killstreaks sit inside each loadout rather than beside it. These are the counts Activision published. Official
| Create-a-Class element | At launch | During the August beta |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | 33 — 24 primary, 8 secondary, 1 melee | 22 |
| Apex Attachments | 28 | 19 |
| Standard attachments | More than 500 | — |
| Tacticals | 9 | 7 |
| Lethals | 11 | 8 |
| Field Upgrades | 11 | 9 |
| Killstreaks | 17 | 10 |
| Perks | 18 | 15 |
- Perks return to a Pick 3 system, with Ninja and Quick Fix among the launch options.Official
- Gunny is a new attachment optimizer inside Create-a-Class. It assembles a build from the attachments you have already unlocked and cycles between close-range, balanced and long-range profiles.Official
- Apex Attachments are the final reward for maxing out a weapon. They are equipped separately from standard attachments and do not consume an attachment slot, and each one changes how the weapon behaves.Official
- 33 Operators at launch, each assignable to an individual loadout, andavailable in Multiplayer and DMZ alike. Official
What your DMZ early access progress already got you
This is the part the other guides for this keyword do not cover, and it is the reason to read an official source rather than a guide: Activision addressed it directly in its launch-day progression post.
Official: DMZ early access levels your Multiplayer weapons
“Get an early start on the Weapon Camo grind with the release of DMZ Early Access on October 20 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases! Level up your weapons and earn Attachments and Camos that will be available in Multiplayer at the game’s official launch on October 23.”Official
So the weapon levels you farmed on October 20 and 21 are not DMZ-only. They are Multiplayer weapon levels, and they carry into the first match on launch day.
Three more official facts complete the picture. Official
- One weapon camo grind across all modes. Activision states that MW4 features a single Weapon Camo grind shared across all modes, and that the Special Camo challenges adjust to the mode you are playing — because non-player targets count in DMZ, the same challenge typically needs a higher kill count there. Finish it in any mode and the camo is available in all of them.
- DMZ XP counts towards your 1–55 player progression. DMZ has its own separate track from level 1 to 70, and XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not raise your DMZ level. The relationship is one-way, and it points in your favour if you played the early access window.
- Military Camos are tied to weapon level, not to the mode. On the Han 86 they unlock at weapon levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65, and each weapon carries its own thresholds. Weapon levels run to 72, and reaching the top unlocks that weapon’s Apex Attachment and its Weapon Prestige.
Add to that the shared Operators, the shared movement suite, and cross-platform progression transfer through your Activision Account, and the honest summary is: the three days of DMZ early access were not side content. They were the only chance to pre-level the weapons you will be using on October 23. Whether that carries over more broadly — Operator prestige, the dog tag track — is still not officially confirmed, and we have marked it that way on ourprogress carry over page.
Still not confirmed
Listed precisely so you can recognise them elsewhere. We are not going to guess at any of these, and we are not repeating them as fact. Unconfirmed
- The total number of launch modes. Activision names fourteen and says more Ground War modes are coming. The “15 modes / 21 playlists” figure is a media tally that includes a mode Activision has not named.
- The names of the remaining Ground War modes, and whether any of them ships with a Hardcore variant.
- The full large-scale map pool. Activision says large-scale combat spaces exist and that they bring vehicle and infantry combat to locations shaped by the campaign’s global conflict, but the names were not in the material we read.
- Crossplay mechanics. The Steam store page lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Activision confirms progression transfers between supported platforms, but the details — turning crossplay off, how matchmaking is split — appear only in third-party guides.
- Ranked playlists and weapon balance. Neither appears in the official launch posts we read.
