MW4 campaign: 16 missions, the early access window and how long it takes
Modern Warfare 4's campaign has sixteen missions across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai, and it hands out one reward per mission — all sixteen of them published by Activision, in order. Here is what is official, what is an estimate, and how long a playthrough actually takes.
Sixteen missions, four cities and one invasion.
The short answer
The Modern Warfare 4 campaign has sixteen missions, confirmed by Activision when Campaign Early Access opened on October 16. Official
- No official playtime. Activision published the mission count, not an hour count. Every playtime figure you see — including the 6–8 and 6–11 hour ranges below — is a reviewer or guide estimate.Media report
- One reward per mission, sixteen in total, published by Activision in order: eight Base Operators, a Calling Card, a Loading Screen, an Emblem, three Double XP Tokens and two Double Weapon XP Tokens. Official
- Every reward is usable in Multiplayer and DMZ once the full game launches on October 23.Official
How long is the MW4 campaign?
Activision has not published a completion time. The official line is that the narrative“plays out across sixteen action-packed missions” — a count, not a duration. Official
So the honest answer has two layers. What is confirmed is the shape: sixteen missions, mixing cinematic set pieces with semi-open encounters, one of which — Stranded — is an open-world mission with optional exploration. What is not confirmed is the clock. Media report
| Source type | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Activision (official) | 16 missions | No hour count published |
| GameSpot | ~8 hours | On normal difficulty |
| howtovideogame | 6–8 hours | Based on early-access reviews |
| worldeka | 6–11 hours | Typical playthrough, varies by difficulty and exploration |
| worldeka | 12–16 hours | Completionists chasing every collectible |
The 16 missions
The mission count, the four locations and the two protagonists are all official. Activision describes it directly:“featuring sixteen missions taking place across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York, and Mumbai as a new invasion threatens to destabilize the world while Price goes on the hunt for the one pulling the strings.”Official
The individual mission names are a different matter. Only two of the sixteen have been published by Activision — Losing Ground and Entrenched, both from official campaign first looks. The rest come from guide sites that have played the early access build. Media report
What makes that list safe to publish is that it can be cross-checked against Activision’s own reward order. The sixteenth rewards are published in sequence, and the mission order reported by guides lands on them exactly: reward one is the Cho operator and the first mission is Mayhem, reward two is the No More Rules calling card and the second mission is Out in the Cold, and the seventh reward is an emblem literally named“Gone Dark” while the seventh mission is called Gone Dark. Media report
| # | Mission | Official completion reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mayhem | “Cho” Base Operator |
| 2 | Out in the Cold | “No More Rules” Calling Card |
| 3 | Following Orders | Double XP Token |
| 4 | Hired Gun | “Dallas” Base Operator |
| 5 | Losing GroundOfficial name | “Ready Line” Loading Screen |
| 6 | Traffic | “Luca” Base Operator |
| 7 | Gone Dark | “Gone Dark” Emblem |
| 8 | Assassins | “Oh-Ji” Base Operator |
| 9 | Survivors | Double XP Token |
| 10 | Stranded | “Kal” Base Operator |
| 11 | Defection | Double Weapon XP Token |
| 12 | Counter Attack | “Dunn” Base Operator |
| 13 | Escape | Double Weapon XP Token |
| 14 | EntrenchedOfficial name | “West” Base Operator |
| 15 | Decapitation | Double XP Token |
| 16 | Greater Good | “Park” Base Operator |
Every completion reward, in order
Activision’s campaign launch post lists the rewards under a single instruction: “Earn the following rewards in order.” That is the complete list — sixteen entries for sixteen missions. Official
- Eight Base Operators: Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park. These are playable in Multiplayer and DMZ, not just in the campaign. Official
- Cosmetic unlocks: the No More Rules Calling Card, the Ready Line Loading Screen and the Gone Dark Emblem. Official
- Five progression tokens: three Double XP Tokens and two Double Weapon XP Tokens.Official
Why the campaign rewards matter for Multiplayer and DMZ
Official wording: “The Modern Warfare 4 Campaign includes completion rewards as players progress through the various missions, all of which will be available for use in Multiplayer and DMZ upon the full game launch.”Official
That makes the campaign a source of Multiplayer and DMZ operators, not just a story. If you only want the operators, the campaign is where eight of the launch roster come from — and early access counts.
Official trailers and material
The campaign trailer is the piece that sets the story up, and Activision published it alongside the story recap in September 2026. It describes MW4 as “conflict with former allies and alliances with a former foe”, and it is where the weapon of war and The Archer are introduced. Official

Campaign early access
Campaign Early Access opened October 16 and runs until the October 23 launch. It is gated behind a digital pre-order or pre-purchase, and it is a separate entitlement from DMZ Early Access — playing the campaign does not unlock DMZ, and DMZ does not unlock the campaign. Official
One practical note: if you played the campaign in those four days you may need an extra update, reported at around30–35 GB. Media report
Full windows and every time zone are on therelease date page, and the eligibility rules are onwho qualifies.
What MW4 ships with — and no Zombies
Modern Warfare 4 launches with three pillars. There is no fourth. Official
Does MW4 have Zombies?
No. There is no Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 4 — not round-based, not open-world, and Activision has not announced one for a later season. Official
The three pillars above are the whole of it, and they are the only modes the official launch material describes. If you played Zombies in the last three Call of Duty games, the part of MW4 that plays like it isDMZ — four-player, PvE, extract with your gear — and the rest of your time goes to the campaign and the new Multiplayer.
One source of confusion worth naming: the only place the word “Zombies” appears in Activision’s MW4 material is the editions blog post, and there it refers to the Black Ops 7 Zombies mode in the pre-order challenge — not to anything in MW4.
What the first reviews say
Campaign Early Access opened on October 16, so the first scores arrived before the full launch. The campaign is being received well, with the story and set pieces doing most of the work. Media report
- GameSpot gave it 7 out of 10, calling it slightly longer than recent Call of Duty campaigns.
- A review round-up described one critic calling it “the greatest Call of Duty campaign ever made”, while others praised the grand cinematic set pieces, the performances and the moral complexity of the story.
- The recurring criticism is rigid mission design with little room to manoeuvre.
- PC Gamer had not published a score at the time of checking but praised the campaign as the most fun Call of Duty campaign in years.
